VC Peter Rip loves Web mashups, but he wonders if too many of them will find it difficult to transform themselves from cool combinations of sites to sustainable businesses. It’s a sobering post leading up to next week’s Mashup Camp, which has garnered so much interest that there’s a second, alternative conference to handle the overflow demand. But if mashups are to be more than the fad of the day, the issues Rip raises will need to be dealt with.
Update: For several reasons, I unexpectedly and very regretfully had to miss most of the Mashup Camp today (Feb. 20), but Dan Farber at Between the Lines has a roundup on the most germane angle: the business models.
