Podcasting Off the 'Pod

A hint of where podcasting may be heading, at a Supernova 2005 panel: “I’ve been thinking for awhile that the future of podcasting is not on the ‘Pod but on the phone,” says Evan Williams of Odeo, a podcasting startup in San Francisco. “Audio is by nature a mobile thing—you can take it wherever you want.”
But will phonecasts be the end of podcasting as we know it? Amy Jo Kim of the online design consultant SocialDesigner.net notes that people using phones tend to consume content of all kinds in short bursts, not the half-hour or hourlong wheezes of many podcasts. Don’t worry, quips Ev: “Everyone I’ve ever talked to thinks podcasts should be shorter, except the creators.”
